A Short Report For Huyawa Work January – April 2004

 

General

• 780 people with problem were received at HUYAWA office. Their problems were to do with education, Healthcare legal cases and social care.

• Seminars were held in 4 out 9 church Districts, emphasis was on community mobilization for self – help/ initiatives in HIV/AIDS prevention, orphan care and care of PLWHA (People Living with HIV/AIDS). Human and legal rights seminars were conducted as well. The total attendance was 564.

 

Education Department

• 42 secondary schools and training centers in the region were visited for checking on the students’ school progress, discussion with both students and teachers and general communication.

• 130 Primary schools in the region were visited to check on the progress of enrolled pupils.

• 1950 school uniforms were given to 850 primary school pupils and 1300 pupils were supplied with school materials.

• For secondary school students, school fees for 1st term was paid for 420 students. 28 students were supported with school material and other school gear and travel expenses were paid for 12 students.

• For skill training, school fees was paid for 51 students

• At University, 3 students were supported with Fees (two medical students and one agricultural student). Research and Fieldwork expenses were met for 2 students.

 

Healthcare Department

• Home visits to AIDS patients were in 98 families for follow-up on their progress, counseling and moral support. Social care support was given according to the need.

• Treatment costs were paid for 1005 patients and referral costs were paid for 2 heart –  surgery orphans for check-up.

• 18 people came for counseling. 12 agreed to test for HIV and 8 out of them were HIV positive.

• 10 Health units were visited for enhancing/establishing cooperation. Dialogue with personnel was on-going.

 

Legal Rights Department

• 72 people came at the office for advice and 16 cases were brought forward from the District. A total number 0f 58 cases were worked on during period (at the grassroots, in primary, district, high court and court of appeal)

• Litigation expenses were paid for 7 cases and the court elders were transported to one site of conflict.

 

Social care Department

• The number of orphans (still in up-date) was 35,000 living in 15003 households. All households were visited by both the Field Assistants and HUYAWA team from the office.

• Food and other needs were supplied for 60 most needy families

• Seminars for Field Assistants were conducted in 7 parishes with a total attendance of 35 Field Assistants new developments and strategies in combating HIV/AIDS.
